Treating your log cabin

You say I need to treat my log cabin but Its pouring with rain, my new log cabin has been installed but I can’t treat it in this weather, will it be OK? Find out all the answers in today’s blog post.

As the seasons change and the weather becomes more unsettled sometimes there is little choice but to leave your cabin untreated whilst you wait for a break in the weather to do it. You may also be decided on the best treatment option and colour is best for you. As a result, we are often asked just how long will my cabin be ok unprotected? Well you will need to protect it as soon as possible to ensure that the guarantee from the manufacturer is valid and to avoid damage to your building.

If you do need to leave it for a while there are a couple of things you need to consider, in wet weather your log cabin will get dirty but a quick wash down with a pressure washer or hose will soon have it looking as good as new. Should you notice darker black marks on your wood this is likely to be a damp fungus forming, don’t worry this is easy to remove with a wipe down with a dilute bleach solution. This is most likely to happen when the timber building is left covered in plastic or tarpaulin for weeks waiting to be installed where the humid conditions created are perfect for damp fungus but it is very easy to remove.

Whilst your timber building will be okay in the short term we do recommend that you treat your cabin sooner rather than later and the reason for this is that if you don’t treat your cabin at all you may encounter issues including:

  • Discolouration of the timber
  • Rapid expansion of the logs
  • Weather ingress into the inside of the cabin
  • A filthy cabin
  • Damage from UV light causing drying, discoloration and splitting
  • Insect and fungus attack – preventable by using a good timber treatment
  • Unsightly watermarks
  • Warping and Shrinkage of the timber causing splitting of the logs

All of the above issues can be prevented by the use of a premium, good quality, timber treatment such as Sadolin. We recommend the use of Sadolin timber treatments to all of our customers and use these also on our timber buildings at our Norfolk Log Cabin Display sites. One of the reasons we love Sadolin is that it is so easy to apply, dries fasts and lasts for up to 5 years before it needs retreating. To keep them at their absolute best our log cabins at the show site are treated to an annual wash down with a mild detergent and a re-coat every year as part of our maintenance programme. Sadolin products offer protection against UV light water ingress, insect and fungal attack as well as preventing rapid expansion of the timber. We recommend to balance out the logs both the inside and outside of your log cabin is treated and is required to ensure the warranty is valid.

Of course another benefit of Sadolin is that you are not limited to a clear colour. All treatments inside and out can be colour mixed to nearly every colour available which just leaves you with the pressure of deciding which colour to go for.
